"Ricavo" which is derived from the Latin "rivus cavus" means river bed, a name not uncommon in Tuscany. From both historical and economical aspects "Ricavo" , Castellina in Chianti was the most important Località with this name in Tuscany.
Ricavo in fact is named for the first time in an official document dated March 994, once stored in the Passigno Abbey.
In the year 1043 Ricavo was property of Count Landolfo of Pancaldoli. Massed with other properties the Ricavo was given as a bridal dowry to the Degli Uberti family.
Later on Ricavo was to become part of the feudal holdings that the Guidi counts had
inherited from the Hohenstaufen Federico I, Enrico VI and Federico II.
Florentine history speaks of Giulio Novello as a ghibellino and also of Count Guido Guerra of whom Dante (Inferno, chant XVI) sings: Fece col senno assai e con la spada
(shrewd of mind as of the sword)
